Post subject:  Is this going to cause me problems???

I'm working slowly but surely on my first build, and when I cut, bent, and glued up the sides to the blocks I came up short. The gap is right where the dovetail will be cut and joined, so I'm wondering if this a non-issue once the dovetail cuts are made, or will part of this gap stiill be visible once the neck is mounted? Certainly not the best pics, but hopefully they're enough to show what I have going on.

Looks fine to me. The back binding should cover any that would be visible below the heel cap.

Fit a small scrap at the bottom so that when you rout the binding, you don't dig into the back.

Looks fine to me. You will be cutting most of that out anyhow.

Be sure to take Haans's advice on fitting in a scrap piece and it'll be fine.

Yes, I think Haans gave very good advice. The back binding will cover the very bottom of your patch. Make sure the heel or a heel cap comes down to the binding. I don't anticipate any structural problems whatsoever. Any potential visual problems will be easy to cover with the binding and heel cap. Press on!

You made it this far, so I'm sure you'll find a way to make it fine! Don't over think it or be afraid to come up with a solution that changes your plans a tad. It usually happens.

I just re-read this and I want to clarify my earlier post:

I did NOT mean "yes it will give you problems". I meant "yes, that's good advice".

I hope I didn't confuse you with that earlier comment. You'll be fine! Please let us see it when you've finished.

I did exactly the same thing on my first guitar. Cut it twice and it's still too short. If you do what Haans suggested you'll be just fine as it will all get cut out or covered. Just remember, it's not a mistake unless you can't fix it.
